A little announcement.....

In case the music doesn't clue you in, we have officially decided on a name:

Elinor

From this day forth, creepy baby george shall be known as either "Ella" or "Elle". YAY! Feels good to have this detail settled. We are indeed sticking to a literary theme for our babies, and one that makes lots of sense is a character from my very favorite Jane Austin novel, Sense and Sensibility. Since Rob is not a book worm like his wife, (and to tell the truth finds Jane Austin type literature particularly distasteful), calling the girl Ella makes lots of sense. Rob may not read a lot, but he sure likes Jazz and one of his very favorite Jazz singers is Ella Fitzgerald. So we are both happy. And hello! Groovy 60's song I've always loved rounds out the package nicely. We like Elle a lot too and figure they will both be used quite a bit, or one will stick better or someday- she may prefer one to the other. We'll see.

As for a middle name, we are not quite decided. Right now, the most likely candidate is Roxy, but it isn't cast in stone. I feel it balances the slight stuffiness of Elinor nicely, but we haven't explored that avenue much, we are just happy to have settled on a first name.

We got Scout's approval tonight, by the way, she poo pooed it at first and when I asked her what she wanted to call her baby sister, she said without hesitation: Cups.

I think we are wise not to go the Cups route, as that may invoke a little teasing now and then.

What a relief, that's how we felt once we finally decided on a name. I think it is a pretty name. Solid but still different. It's cute, and I really like Ella. Just to let you know, if you do her middle name as "Roxy" everyone is going to think it is because of the clothing brand. Just so you know. I know it is actually a family name but you will have to explain it fiddy times. Yay congrats! Oh and is also reminds me of the Beatles song: Elinor Rigby. One of my faves actually.

Haha!!! Cups is almost as good as Shapes. I like Elinor, a little old fashioned, but I'm digging the song. And she can be L, and hang out with her Aunt B! Creepy baby L it is!

Yay!!! Awesome name, by the way. Even if it is spelled differently. For the record, I wanted to spell ours Elanor (from LOTR), but had that vetoed by Alex.

Your daughter will love the name. It has so many variants that she can go by that she can have lots of alter-egos and still use her name. My Ellie decided when she went to Kindergarten that she wanted to go by Eleanor in school. Go figure. She said recently that she wants to go by Sofia (her middle name) in first grade. Not sure what to say about that...

Anyhow, congrats on the name decision.. It's certainly a relief.

On an entirely different note. If you have not yet seen the new Sense and Sensability you MUST!!!

I'm glad all seem to like it, I had that impression on the family blog. I like how it is an old fashioned name that hasn't yet been done to death (like Madison). As for Roxy, it's popularity seems to have faded quite a bit in the last 10 years, so I am counting on that decline to continue. If not, I will tell anyone and everyone I need to that the name has nothing to do with Quicksilver.
What is this about a new S and S? I had never heard of it so looked it up and am pleased to see it is a mini series, which means more of it to love. I picked the book up last night, figuring I should read it again in honor of Ella. Rob and I listened to TKAM in the car while pregnant with Scout. We took a road trip up to Wyoming a few weeks before her birth and listened to it the whole way. A weird coincidence: we finished it in the last five minutes of our ride to the hospital while I was in labor about to give birth to her.
B, I can hang out with you and L. I'm M.

I just looked up Elinor and Roxy on a baby name finder and found out that Elinor is ranked #2365 (the more conventional spelling is ranked quite higher) in popularity and is French in origin and means light or moon, and Roxy is ranked #1664, is Persian and means Dawn. Hmmmm, Moon and then Dawn. Interesting.

As in New Moon and Breaking Dawn? It's so fun to pick out a name and feel good about it! I'm happy for you. I'm getting excited to meet her!

ARG! I was already worried about calling her Ella thinking it sounds too close to Bella (Isabella is currently ranked #2, go figure). That is quite funny you pointed that out Aims, it didn't even breach my radar. Oh well, it's subtle.

I thought of it too, that's why I thought you said it was interesting! Haha.

I wasn't sure if you had noticed it too. Kindof funny. I've heard of a lot of Isabellas lately, too. Just curious if Edward has become a more popular name. I haven't heard of any, but I bet it has.

I love it. Ella especially and I don't think ppl will care it sounds like Bella. I think the more common spelling Eleanor is better only because she won't have to correct everyone who spells it that way. Just a thought. Roxy is cute too. Very hip. Main thing is she is healthy:)

I like it Em! I like Ella and all the other possibilities that come with Elinor. And I think it sounds cute with Scout :) Scout and Ella. Scout and Cups. That also sounds nice, but maybe you're right; too easy to tease with a name like Cups :)

I wondered that too Aim, and forgot to look it up, so I did and it's only #227 which surprised me greatly (I've always really liked the name, but do not like Eddie and really really hate Ed).The page I found my info on is worth looking up: http://www.babycenter.com/baby-names-edward-1465.htm Some notable things about it are: if you like Edward some other names you may consider: Jasper, Jacob and Emmett, also they list people named Edward and sisters they have and a popular one is Bella. PLEASE TELL ME THESE CHILDREN ARE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD (the book came out in 2005). If not, heaven help these people (especially their off spring).

About the spelling-- I'm not going to budge on the spelling, if I am naming her after a book, she must be spelled the same way, I am a purist in that regard. She is going to be spelling her last name anyway like I have to do, everyone on the planet wants to spell it Pew, as in church. At least it is legitimate French and Old English spelling instead of going with Emmalee (I swear I know a girl spelled that way) or Ashleigh to be cute. Ami, you have a unconventional but meaningful way to spell your name, does the correction get to you much?

I have a name that is spelled seriously about a ba-jillion ways and I always have to correct/spell it out for people. I just got used to it. I also had to do it with Phister a lot too. I ALSO have to do it with my new last name, everyone thinks it is Cook. My mother in law warned me about it before I got married, haha.

Like Haley, I just go used to spelling my name for people. I hated it in elementary, but now I like being a different spelling.

Just so you know, no one seems to know how to spell Eleanor anyway, so even if you went with the conventional spelling, you'd still have to spell it. I personally think you should go with Elinor. I have my regrets about not sticking up for the spelling I wanted, and think you should stick to your guns!

Also, if she ever moves to Britain she'll feel more at home.

I love it Em! I like the spelling too. And I agree with Ami, even if you gave her the traditional spelling, she'd still be spelling it for people. And Eleanor Rigby is one of my top 25 favorite Beatle songs, so it makes me happy. ( I really like Cups too, by the way)

Speaking of people who will have to spell their names for the rest of their life. You know our friends Jeff and Missy? Well their last name is spelled Colquhoun. Pronounced, Cal-hoon, pretty common last name, but with the traditional Scottish spelling which has a silent "qu". They have 2 boys which they named Nicholas and Michael. Good, common first names. But did they spell their names traditionally, like above? No! Nick is Nicklas, and Mike is Mikal. Why? Because the traditional spellings didn't make sense to Missy. She doesn't understand how a "ch" can have a "k" sound, and she thought the extra "o" in Nick's name and the extra "e" in Mike's name were just extra letters that don't make sense. This coming from someone who has a freaking silent "qu" in her last name! So, those 2 boys will ALWAYS have to spell both their first and last names to everyone! Sorry, a little rant.

Creepy baby George is mooning us!

Speaking of having to spell your name for everyone on the planet... I have to spell mine at least once a day, then tell them the origin, then explain that yes, my parents were hippies, and then we can get back to me ordering a sandwich/sending a fax/being chewed out for not letting them cash their sons check (true story, happened today). I love having an original name, but I am probably going to name my kids uncommon, traditional names. So, I'm looking for some of those. However, if I come across something as awesome as Bronwyn, I'll have to go for it.

I like that you chose a different, cooler spelling of Elinor. Sue's right, she will probably still have to spell it out. I met a baby named Quoy today, spelled Coy. He'd probably still have to spell it too.

Ami-
I just finished the Sense and Sensibility mini series today and liked it. I like how with that extra hour, they were able to stay truer to the book and add some scenes and characters that the other movie had to chop. I liked most of the actors but have a few critiques of the men. Edward did great, no problem whatsoever there. Marianne's suitors on the other hand disappointed me. Perhaps when it comes to Brandon, the guy just lacked Rickman's finesse and how can you blame him? Not much he could do with that poor guy. Willoughby however, made himself not the least bit likable. I wonder why the director and co. decided to do that? You are supposed to like him and you (and Elinor) are supposed to pity him when he goes to her and explains all. You are still to find him a cad of course, but you still feel compassion for him and he had true regrets and feelings and love, this character was cold hearted at all times and excuse my vulgarity, but just looked at all times like his only intentions were to get into women's pants. Which isn't the case, he made many mistakes and poor judgments, but he was not like that. They also left out my favorite line when he tells Elinor that he shall now go away and live in dread of one event. He is just so likable in the book and movie, you see why Marianne falls for him. This character does none of that. He's kind of creepy and hateful.
With the Brandon relationship at the end, I really liked how they did that. In the book, Austin just kind of throws them together without much thought kind of leaving it to seem cold and merely obliging. I think it was only her inexperience that caused that. Between the lines, you know Marianne enough to see through it and understand that her eventual fall for him is deep and meaningful, not merely abandoning her sensibility for sense, but genuinely falling for him. The movie made it more satisfying then the book, but the miniseries went a step further and it was nice. There is a special place in my heart for their relationship and I appreciated what they did with it.
Oh, Sir John Middleton and the Steele sisters were GREAT. I love the movie Sir John so much I was worried he wouldn't fill his shoes, but this guy (Mr. Weasley) did fantastic. The Steeles made me laugh so hard, especially Anne. Anyway, thanks for bringing the show to my attention, I enjoyed it.
