The Gauntlet

This post is aimed at you Sue.

This is something I have been thinking about for a long time, and all this talk of books has pushed it to the fore-front. What would you say to a little challenge?
We all know by now that I am a fan of Harry Potter and Sue is a fan of The Lord of the Rings, and we have both expressed disinterest/distaste for the other series.
My challenge to you or the gauntlet I am throwing down is that I will read the Lord of the Rings and you, dear sis, will read Harry Potter.
After we have done this, one of two things will be able to happen. Either we will gain an appreciation or (gasp) end up liking the others preference, OR we will be able to knock the others series with more knowledge and vigor then ever before.

VS.

Harry Vs. Frodo was going to be the title for this blog, but heaven help me, I just couldn't handle being that nerdy.

I propose that we would each deem how much the other needs to read of the series for the challenge. We each know our series and for example, I think you need to read AT LEAST through book 3, (book 4 ideally), because that is where the series really starts to take off, the first 2 are just children's books.
I am also wondering if anyone else wants in (are a fan of one and not the other) we could extend the challenge into 2 camps. These camps would not be large, as my fan base (or people that read my blog) is not a big one (fan base! I like that, it's a nice way to refer to the few members of my family and one or two friends that actually read this!).
If Sue excepts this challenge, I will be tracking my progress of the books on this blog, and how I am doing with them, and I encourage Sue to do the same. I will warn you though, it may take a while as I am in the middle of two books right now and I am sure Sue has books too. But, I can always start a 3rd.....................................

Ooh fun! This shall be interesting to see. I have not read either so I'm not much help. Marcus read most of the Harry Potter's and really liked them. So we are having another "Fremont Therapy Bowl" football game, like the one we did the weekend of Matt and B's reception. It's next weekend (Sept 6th saturday)We were wondering if it would be a good weekend for you guys to come up and Rob can play in it. Just a suggestion. So I heard Scout started pre-school today! How fun!

Accept your challenge, I will. Read the Harry Potter books, I shall. Sorry! We watched a Star Wars movie last night and I have Yoda on the brain. (Yoda kicks ass. Sorry, butt) How did I become such a nerd?

Anyway, I think this should prove to be interesting. It should make for some knock down, drag out blogs. You should definitely begin with The Hobbit. Which, by the way, they recently announced they are making 2 movies out of that book. Peter Jackson is the executive producer and Guillermo del Toro will direct them. I about peed my pants when I found out!

I will give you some advice on reading the LOTR books. Skip over the songs! There is a song every few pages. I think they are the reason most people start the books, and put them down. A couple of years ago, I read the series again, and I made myself read every single song. I decided you can skip them.

Do you have the Harry Potter books, so I can borrow them? Or do I have to embarrass myself and get them at the library? I have the LOTR books, you can borrow them, just don't dog ear any of the pages. I hate that.

The game is afoot! (nerd)

Sue said...

Oh yeah, 2 things. You must read the entire series. There is the Hobbit, then the 3 LOTR books. (LOTR is how us cool people refer to The Lord of the Rings, hee hee) You must read them all because the very last one, The Return of the King, is the best book ever written! EVER!

And if anyone wants to join me in reading the Harry Potter books, I'd appreciate it very much. We can be like a support group for eachother. And we can come up with a cool team name like the Harry Pot Pots or something.

Emily said...

Wow.

I never dreamed you would accept the challenge in Yoda.

Ok, shake it off Em. I am happy you accept. How should we do this? Do we insist on the whole series, or should we just decide how much the other needs to read? I'm up for either. Yes, you can borrow my books, lets not let the librarians know you are stooping to reading Harry Potter. I have Breaking Dawn to give you anyway and the next Mary Tyler Moore if you are interested.
Since Scout handles my books fairly often, I think I will just check them out at the library (they have self check out, to protect my anonymity), it sounds like they are fairly sacred to you, so I wouldn't want Scouts little hands on them.

Emily said...

Ah, you answered my question before I sent my message. Very Jedi.
All 7 Harry Pot Pots for you it is!
By the way, that was the funniest thing I have ever read. If no one else joins you could you still be the Harry Pot Pots?
Do I have any love in the fro fro camp?

Sue said...

Yes, my books are quite sacred to me, so I would appreciate it if Scout kept her grimey hands off them! Oh, just kidding, I love her little hands.

I will still call myself the Harry Pot Pots if noone else joins me. And you could be the Fro Fros or The Flying Gandolphs or Aragorn's Midnight Runners. ( I could go on with team names forever!) And everyone in your team must call themselves by their name, and then son or daughter of their dad's name. For instance, you would be Emily, daughter of George. You'll see what I mean when you start reading the books.

Emily said...

Oh man I am so scared.

Sue said...

Don't be scared Emily, daughter of George. Start campaigning for some support. Maybe Haley, daughter of Scott, or Bronwyn, daughter of Mr.Howdyshell will join your team.

I'm scared to read the Harry Potter books! There are 7 of them? Yikes!

Sue said...

I just looked at the pictures you posted of Harry Potter and Frodo Baggins, and got pissed off at Harry's scarf.

What have I gotten myself into?

Emily said...

That scarf happens to be the colors of his house team at school, the Griffindors. Their symbol is a lion and Griffindors stand for bravery and their nemesis house team is Slytherin (silver and green and snakes).

Yes there are 7, one for every school year for Harry. They are very easy reads and the first 3 are quite short.

Sue said...

Oh man this is going to suck. At least there is a snake in it.

The cloak Frodo is wearing is an elven cloak given to him by Galadriel who is a ruler of Lothlorien.

Take that!

Emily said...

There are plenty of snakes in the books but they always represent dark magic and He Who Must Not Be Named. By the way, after reading the first book or two, watch the Office, season 3 "Beach Games" again. Funny stuff.

Harry also has a cloak, called the cloak of invisibility. It was given to him by his father from beyond the grave. Does Frodo's cloak make him invisible?
Take that!

Emily said...

So when do you want me to drop off the box of books?

heehee...........

Sue said...

Ummmm the ring makes Frodo invisible! Duh! Actually, the cloak kind of does too. He can hide under it and look like a rock if an orc walks by.

He Who Must Not be Named? PLEASE don't tell me that is a character in the book! I will gouge my eyes out!

I'm not going anywhere this weekend. If you're coming up to Salt Lake you could drop them by. You and Cat and I should hang out at a park for a couple of hours on Saturday or something. With the kids of course.

Haley said...

Wow...this is going to be better than I even imagined! Sue, you do have to watch Beach Games, so funny. Jim is hilarious. Sue you are now in the same league as Dwight! I haven't decided if I want to join in on the reading fun or not. I'm kind of partial to the Harry Pot Pots!

Sue said...

I think I've seen that episode of the Office, but it has been a long time. Same league as Dwight! Oh man! I love his hair. I love how serious he is about everything.

Please join the Harry Pot Potts Haley! Maybe I'll knit each member of the team a stupid scarf of bravery, or whatever it was Em said. Just kidding, I don't know how to knit.

Emily said...

Saturday sounds good. I am game. I like how you tacked in duh after telling me about the ring. LIKE I KNOW!!!!!!!!
Matt text me, he read this post and the comments and said it is the funniest thing he has ever read. BY THE WAY, that is not a "scarf of bravery", it is just part of his school uniform and represents his house. He who must not be named is what most of the wizard community calls Lord Voldemort, he raised such terror they are even afraid to speak of him 12 years later. And I am wrestling with my own problems, some day soon I am actually going to know what a ork is.
Haley-
I rolled on the floor laughing at Dwight and Jim and their team names on that episode. So funny!
I would try to persuade you to join my camp, but honestly, I think you will really like the Harry Potter books, so I think you should join the Harry Pot Pots, much as I'd like your support.

Sue said...

Have you read Cat's status on her myspace? It made me laugh really hard. I guess there are about a million "he who must not be named" in LOTR, and they are called Orcs! They are terrible warmongering, hideous creatures that are created out of pure evil.

You have a good point about Haley wanting to join the Harry Pot Pots. I want her to read the LOTR books, so she should join the Fro Fros. Everyone should, then they will know how good the books are. I'll just be a Harry Pot Pot by myself wearing my scarf of bravery.

Emily said...

Haha, Cath's status was funny. We are the ones that need to put our moods as nerdy though.

Not so fast, Haley gets to decide which camp she joins. I guess IF she chooses one, we will both win in a way, either she reads the series we think she'll like, or we get her on our side reading them with us.

Haley said...

Hehe. I want to eventually read both but for now I will be a Harry Pot Pot. My mom said she also wants to read both but will read Harry Potter first because she has already read the first two. So chalk up two more for the Harry Pot Pots!

Sue said...

Whohoo! Team Harry Pot Pots is building! I thought of another name for your team Em. Gollum's Precious Hobitses. Hee hee, you'll understand it later.

Emily said...

What?
Camp Fro Fro Baggs is starting to feel very lonely.
I am still on search for the perfect name. It will come.

Hey! Wait!! I've been really really busy today, but I've been laughing really really hard at these comments for the past 20 minutes!! SO, since I am already a die-hard Harry Potter fan (and want a scarf of bravery really bad!!) I am officially joining Camp Fro fro Baggs/Gollums Little Hobbitses/Galadriels Princess Warriors Against Giant Scary Spiders!!!! So now you're not alone Ems! Join you, I shall. Matt says he feels bad for all of us.

Love B

Emily said...

Yay B! I've been wondering where you were today and was holding out hope that you might join my camp, being a fellow Harry Potter fan and I know you also snoozed through at least one of the LOTR's movies.

I feel bad for us all too, Matt.
Help us.

Sue said...

I think everyone probably feels bad for us all by now.

Fro Fro Baggs is a great team name! Or you could be The Smeagles, or Fugitives from The Shire, or Treebeard's Little Passengers, or Legolas's Pointy Arrows, or Shelob's Web Crusaders, or We are Only Reading These Books Because Sue is Reading Harry Potter!

Emily said...

While I do like the last one an awful lot, I think I have made a decision. From henceforth, we shall be known as........The Fro Baggs. I can't handle the other names Sue, they come out of the computer and slap me in the face reminding me that I am going to know what you are talking about someday.
Besides, The Fro Baggs has made me giggle for about 10 minutes now, so that's how I know I have come up with a winner.

Rob just shook his head and said, "you guys just need to stop." He also has said since that this has been very eye opening for a husband. Sigh. Oh well, I think he still loves me......

Sue said...

The Fro Baggs it is! Too funny.

Cam had the opposite reaction. All this LOTR talk has made him want to watch the movies. So I am excited to announce that Cam and I are having a LOTR film-fest this weekend! All 3 extended versions! That is almost 16 hours of LOTR yumminess.

Anonymous said...

Yay Fro Baggs!!! I sat through each movie exactly once, back in the days when I couldn't fall asleep during movies. They were for my mothers birthday, yay for parents forcing me to do things! I was at a friends house once when she put on the extended version, and I had to leave. I did enjoy the movies, but I can only sit through so much. And I think I was turned off of the books because of all the songs (VERY glad I can skip them) and because there were like 10 pages of forest description that I could NOT get through. And Matt is very disturbed by this all, but being very cute and funny about it! And you guys haven't answered Haley's question about coming down yet!!

B

Emily said...

Oh, I did to my dad, sorry. Rob thinks that next weekend might be do able, but I haven't seen my work schedule yet. I will find out tonight, then we'll see.

Sue said...

I'm not going to be able to go that weekend. Sunday the 7th, I'm leaving for a business trip to the lovely city of Twin Falls, Idaho! Yahoo! I get the feeling Twin Falls will make Riverton look like New York City! I also get the feeling I'm going to get a lot of Harry Potter reading in while I'm there.

I read the previous posts before I read these, and I have to say, it's the most fun I've had in a while... I must know how it all turns out!
